The Milwaukee Brewers added a veteran pitcher to their banged-up bullpen Tuesday by signing right-handed pitcher Julian Tavarez for the rest of the 2008 season. Tavarez who is 35 years old surrendered 9 ER in 9 games with the Red Sox this season before being designated for assignment. He worked out for Brewers officials on Sunday in Washington, D.C., then traveled with the team back to Milwaukee and passed a physical on Tuesday. To clear a spot on the 25-man roster, the Brewers optioned left-hander Zach Jackson back to Triple-A Nashville.

On July 12, 2008, Jose Canseco will fight Ex-Pro Bowler Vai Sikahema at the Atlantic City Bernie Robbins Stadium. He told his opponent that he would pay 5,000 dollars for him to fight Canseco. He said this because he recently revealed that he was kicked out of his home because of foreclosure. Canseco has a size advantage (6-foot-4 and 240 pounds) compared to Sikahema who is 5-foot-9 and 190 pounds.

On Monday, the Phillies crushed the Colorado Rockies 20-5 to give Jamie Moyer his first career win against that team. Chase Utley was a huge part of this win by having 6 RBIs, 2 singles, and a 3-Run Home Run. The Phillies scored the most runs by any team this season and had a total of 19 hits. Every starter reached base at least once and only Pat Burrell and Moyer didn’t get a hit. Shane Victorino reached base five times with a hit, two walks and two hit-by-pitches, and scored four times. So Taguchi, making his first start since May 8, recorded three hits.  Chris Coste, smacked a three-run homer and collected two other hits. Philadelphia batted around three times in the game, and had two six-run inning. Jamie Moyer went 7 innings with only 4 ER. The 45-year-old veteran collected his 235th win, moving him one behind Whitey Ford for 59th on the all-time list. By beating the Rockies in his fifth attempt — he had been 0-4 with a 5.54 ERA before Monday — the lefty has now defeated every Major League team. He joined Kevin Brown, Al Leiter, Terry Mulholland, Curt Schilling and Woody Williams as the only six pitchers to accomplish that feat.

Sunday, Omar Vizquel broke a record for shortstops that has been held for a long time. It was Luis Aparicio’s record for most games played at shortstop in a career. Vizquel took sole possession of first place with 2,584 games at shortstop. In the bottom of the 6th inning he was standing out on the field alone so the fans could honor what he had just done. In the second game of a doubleheader against the Marlins on Sunday, when Vizquel went out to short, the teleprompter at Dolphin Stadium flashed a note of congrats, a crowd of 14,674 rose to its feet in applause and the 41-year-old shortstop mildly tipped his cap. He struggled at the plate going 0-7 and committed his first error before being taken out in the 7th inning. Vizquel’s 2,584 games is a lot for a 5-foot-8, 175-pound guy who is playing one of the most demanding positions in baseball. In his 20-year MLB career he has 10 Gold Gloves and a .274 Batting Average. He also has a .984 Fielding Percentage and has been a part of an all-time leading 1,658 double plays and stil counting.

San Diego Padres Win in 18 Innings Monday , May 26, 2008

Adrian Gonzalez only got to pinch-hit in the Padres’ 22-inning loss to the Colorado Rockies on April 17 as Tony Clark got a rare start at first base. Sunday, Gonzalez made sure that there wouldn’t be a repeat of the length or the outcome of that game as he blasted a two-out, three-run home run in the bottom of the 18th inning, lifting the Padres to an improbable 12-9 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Petco Park. This happened by Scott Hariston taking a walk, then he stole second base, and advanced to third on a Marcus Giles groundball which was bobbled by Joey Votto. So there were guys at 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs and the count for Gonzalez was 3-2 and he swung hard at Edison Volquez’s changeup and hit a 3-run Home Run to straightaway center field.

Alcohol was a factor in the death of a 25-year-old man who fell down a stairwell at Turner Field during the game between the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets. Justin Hayes of Cumming, Ga., suffered head injuries Wednesday night and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. He fell about 150 feet from the club level to the landing on the field level during the eighth inning. Hayes may have been sliding down the hand rails when he fell. Turner Field, built for the 1996 Olympics, has been the Braves’ home stadium since 1997. The Braves said it’s the first non-medical fatality at the stadium.

Mike Piazza a 12 time All-Star Catcher decided to call it quits from baseball on Tuesday. He was considered one of the top hitting catchers in the history of the MLB. The 39-year-old Piazza batted .275 with eight homers and 44 RBIs as a designated hitter for Oakland last season, became a free agent and did not re-sign. Taken by the Los Angeles Dodgers on the 62nd round of the 1988 amateur draft, Piazza became a 12-time All-Star, making the NL team 10 consecutive times starting in 1993. Piazza finished with a .308 career average, 427 home runs and 1,335 RBIs for the Dodgers (1992-98), Florida (1998), Mets (1998-05), San Diego (2006) and Oakland (2007). Piazza’s 396 homers are easily the most as a catcher, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Carlton Fisk is second with 351, followed by Johnny Bench (327) and Yogi Berra (306). He is 39 years old. He also had some awards including 1993 NL Rookie of the Year and is a 10x Silver Slugger Award Winner (1993-2003).

Jon Lester of Red Sox Pitches No-Hitter Tuesday , May 20, 2008

Boston Red Sox Left-hander Jon Lester became the second pitcher in history to throw a no-hitter against the Kansas City Royals tonight in a 7-0 Red Sox win. The Royals only really came close to a hit on one occasion: José Guillen sent a sinking two-out liner into center in the fourth, but Jacoby Ellsbury made a terrific diving catch. Lester began the ninth by walking Esteban German, who went to second on Tony Peña’s grounder to third. David DeJesus grounded out to first as German raced to third. With the sellout crowd of 37,746 standing and roaring, Lester ended the game by striking out Alberto Callaspo on a high outside fastball. It was the 18th no-hitter in Red Sox history but the first by a left-hander since Mel Parnell on July 14, 1956. Last season he came back after he survived Cancer. Last year he also had the World Series game clincher which led to a World Series for the Boston Red Sox
